Here’s Where the Next Florida Hurricane Will Hit

USAttorneys

After Hurricane Ian, many of us are wondering the same thing: “When is the next storm coming?” Or perhaps more importantly: “Where is the next storm going to hit?” If there’s one thing we know about mother nature, it’s that she’s completely unpredictable. There’s no real way of knowing what the future will bring. Florida could be safe from serious hurricanes for the next decade for all we know. But according to recent studies, scientists are relatively confident about the most hurricane-prone areas of Florida. Here’s what the latest data says:

13.4 Million Properties Now Exposed to Future Hurricanes

According to the First Street Foundation, over 13 million properties will be exposed to tropical cyclones over the next 30 years. But here’s the kicker: These are properties that have never been exposed to these kinds of winds before. This suggests that the threat of tropical storms is expanding across the nation, with many homeowners facing these issues for the first time.

The study has also determined that Florida is the most exposed state — perhaps no surprises there. But the interesting — or disheartening — thing about this data is that it suggests that more cities in Florida will be exposed to storms. These include cities that typically experience a lighter effect, such as Jacksonville. A representative warned:

“Hurricanes are making their way northward. They’re making it latitudinally up to places they haven’t before. The second thing that comes along with that is they’re stronger.”

Florida is also expected to experience an annual loss of $1 billion per year in hurricane damage alone. This includes roof damage, flood damage, and everything else that a hurricane typically causes. The 20 American cities with the highest chance of being hit by a hurricane are all located in Florida.

Speaking about their findings, a representative of the First Street Foundation explained:

“Quantifying hurricane wind exposure and the resulting financial implications for every property in the country ushers in a new era in the understanding of the physical impacts of climate change. Compared to the historic location and severity of tropical cyclones, this next generation of hurricane strength will bring unavoidable financial impacts and devastation that have not yet been priced into the market.”

What Does This Mean for Florida Homeowners?

Florida homeowners need to prepare for the prospect of hurricane damage in the next few decades — even if their local area has never experienced major hurricane damage before. Become more familiar with your homeowners’ insurance policy and determine what you’re covered for. The Florida government is also looking at making changes to protect homeowners — but you are responsible for your own home.
